With the smart Roomba vacuum robots, we can further automate our home. But even if these little helpers vacuum your home on their own, they have to recover and recharge from time to time.

But how long does a Roomba cleaning cycle take and which models are able to clean the most square feet per day? With this question, it is also important whether the Roomba is one of the newer models with the Recharge and Resume feature. With this feature, it starts to clean exactly where it left off and gets a lot more done than the older models.

The following table shows the running and charging times of the most popular Roomba models:

Roomba i7 and i7+

The two models Roomba i7 * and i7+ * are the same except for their base station. The base station of the i7+ can even automatically empty the dirt out of the Roomba.

Runtime

Both models have a runtime of about 75 minutes.

This time period applies to a fully charged battery and a suitable surface, such as tiles or other hard surfaces such as wood or PVC. The runtime is shortened accordingly with surfaces that demand more energy, as with carpets.

However, the vacuum robot does not have to be running for the entire runtime because it has the smart Imprint Mapping technology. This way it remembers its surroundings and calculates the best way to clean most efficiently. Once it is finished and everything is done, it can also finish its cleaning cycle before it runs out of battery.

Charging Time

The charging time for these two models is about 2 hours.

Both the Roomba i7 and the i7+ have the Recharge and Resume feature. If your Roomba hasn’t finished everything within 75 minutes of cleaning, it will automatically drive back to the charging station and charge it. With the Recharge and Resume feature, however, it then starts exactly where it left off. This prevents on the one hand that it does not finish the complete floor and on the other hand that he runs over some surfaces twice and some not at all.

How can I tell if the i7 or i7+ is loading?

Roomba i7 and i7+ models automatically return to the base station after each cleaning cycle or when the battery is running low. After docking, the CLEAN button lights up differently depending on the status. The individual statuses and their indicators are listed here:

  • Pulsating red light: Battery is charging and is too weak to start a new cleaning cycle.
  • Pulsating white light: The Roomba is charging.
  • Continuous white light: The Roombas battery is fully charged.
  • Rotating white light: Software update in progress or the robot is just starting up. It may take up to one minute to boot.

But keep in mind that these indicators turn off automatically after one minute to save energy. If you want to check the status of the battery, just press the CLEAN button once. You can also view the status via the iRobot Home App.

Roomba 980, 960 and 890

Runtime

With these three models, there are already more substantial differences in their runtime. Of all the vacuum robots presented here, the Roomba 980* has the longest runtime of 120 minutes. These full 2 hours are pretty amazing.

The Roomba 960*, on the other hand, only has a battery life of 75 minutes and the 890* only has 60 minutes. Here you can see a significant performance difference – especially between the 980 and the 890.

The Roomba 980 also has the Recharge and Resume feature in addition to its long battery life of 2 hours. This not only allows it to clean for a very long time but also allows it to start again exactly where it left off after recharging.

The Roomba 960 also has this feature, but the 890 does not. This means that the Roomba 890 can only handle much smaller areas due to this missing feature and its rather short battery life of only 60 minutes.

Charging Time

With a pure charging time of 2 hours, these three models differ just as little from each other as the rest in this article.

These three models from the Roomba family use the iAdapt navigation system. Through this system and the built-in infrared sensors, the Roombas always knows exactly where they are and creates a virtual map of the room to find the most efficient route to vacuum.

Roomba 690, 675 and 614

Check Price:

With Roomba’s older 600 models, you’ll have to do without some of the ingenious features of the newer models. You could say that they are stupider than their successor models, which means that you have to manually help out more often. But they have also become very cheap*!

Runtime

All three models in Roomba’s 600 Series have a 90-minute battery life in ideal conditions. Ideal conditions means that the battery is fully charged and you will find an easy surface such as tiles or wooden flooring. With carpets, the runtime is reduced because more energy is needed for vacuuming and moving.

Charging Time

Interestingly, all Roomba models take about 2 hours to recharge. Unlike the smart Roomba i-Series or 900 Series models, the Roombas 600 Series will not automatically start cleaning again after being recharged.

Their navigation is also far less sophisticated and smart than with the other models. They have the first version of the iAdapt navigation system and clean the space at random. They only stop when their battery needs to be recharged or when they decide through the sensors that they have vacuumed most of the room.

The cleaning result at the end, therefore, depends on the size of the room. With the newer models and especially with the i-series, i.e. the i7 or i7+, the result is noticeably better in the end.

When do I need to replace the battery in a Roomba?

With normal use, a Roomba battery will last 2 to 4 years. Depending on how well you take care of it, it can last 5 years and more.

Often Roomba owners think that they need to replace the battery as soon as the battery life decreases. However, this is quite normal and you can bypass this with a regular battery reset. If you do this reset regularly, the battery will last much longer. This is how you perform a battery reset:

  • Press the CLEAN button to wake up or turn on your Roomba.
  • Press and hold the SPOT and DOCK buttons for 10 seconds. After that, you’ll hear a confirmation sound.
  • After resetting the battery, you should charge Roomba for at least 12 hours before using it again.

In addition to the battery reset, there are a few other care and maintenance instructions for the battery that can increase its life:

  • Use only iRobot batteries*.
  • The iRobot batteries like to be used frequently. So you should run your Roomba every day or every other day.
  • Even if you are not using the robot, you should leave it docked at the base station.
  • Remove obstructive objects in the mechanics of the robot such as hair, for example, so that it uses as little energy as possible on its tour.
  • After using the suction robot, you should recharge it as soon as possible. If the Roomba has a base station, it does this for you by automatically returning.
  • If you are going on holiday and you are away for a few weeks, you should fully charge the battery and then disconnect it from the charging station and store it in a cold, dry place until you are back.

Summary

In conclusion, a normal Roomba cleaning cycle lasts between 60 and 120 minutes. This is the range between the models, with Roomba 980* holding out the longest and 890* the shortest. However, you have to keep in mind that the runtime is slightly reduced when carpets come into play.

The ingenious new feature of Roomba Recharge and Resume can multiple these runtimes, as the robot vacuum cleaner with this feature always start cleaning exactly where it stopped before charging. So in principle, it doesn’t matter how long the Roomba can clean, because at the end of the day it has cleaned everything anyway.

You can keep a Roombas running for as long as possible with regular care and maintenance for the battery without having to buy a new one. This maintenance and care includes at least the regular resetting of the battery and the removal of objects in the mechanics of the robot such as hair.
