Smart home devices are great and can make life easier – but only if they work!
Even the Ring Doorbell* is not error-free. A doorbell that doesn’t ring is useless – in our guide, you’ll find solutions in case your Ring Doorbell doesn’t ring. These are the most common causes:

  • No WLAN connection
  • Weak WLAN signal
  • Poor power supply

What’s a Ring Doorbell?

A Ring Doorbell* is a WLAN-enabled doorbell and can make your life much easier. It is compatible with some smart home devices

With the Ring Doorbell, you can see on your smartphone who is at the door at the moment. You can also use an integrated intercom to communicate with your visitor.

Especially for security purposes, the Ring Doorbell is often used. It is very practical to see who is at the door. The advantage over an intercom with a screen is that you can use the Ring Doorbell with your smartphone or tablet and do not need an extra screen.

Another advantage is that you don’t have to be at home with your cell phone or tablet to see who is at the door with you. You can also use Ring Doorbell’s app from work or vacation.

So you can always see who is at your door, no matter where you are. Ring Doorbell can also be equipped with a surveillance camera. This camera reacts to movements thanks to a motion detector.

But what if the Ring Doorbell doesn’t work? We have listed a list of typical Ring Doorbell problems and how you can fix them most easily.

If the Ring Doorbell Forgets to Connect to the WLAN

How can I recognize that the error is due to the WLAN connection?

  • the light at the Ring Doorbell shines white
  • when you press the Ring Doorbell buttons, you’ll hear a beep
  • the Ring App no longer delivers messages
  • there are no old messages to retrieve in the Ring App

If one or more of the items on the list appear on your Ring Doorbell, then your Ring Doorbell has probably disconnected from the WLAN.

That in itself is not too bad. You can follow a few steps, which we explain further down in the text, to reconnect your Ring Doorbell to the WLAN.

If the Ring Doorbell Only Receives Weak WLAN

How can I tell that the Ring Doorbell receives a weak WLAN signal?

  • the video quality is worse than usual
  • sometimes no messages arrive on the smartphone
  • the messages on the smartphone arrive late
  • the live view does not connect or connects very slowly

Even if one of the listed symptoms applies to your Ring Doorbell, you should check your WLAN connection. How this works exactly, you will find out further down in the text.

If the Ring Doorbell Has a Bad Power Supply

How can I tell that the Ring Doorbell has a bad power supply?

  • the WLAN connection gets lost again and again
  • the white light at the Ring Doorbell switches off again and again
  • the live image is frozen in between
  • the night vision does not work at all
  • the Ring App works sometimes well, sometimes not at all

The power line to the Ring Doorbell should have 16 volts AC. Nevertheless, it is possible that this line will be disturbed for some reason.

Thus the Ring Doorbell does not receive enough power. This can also be remedied. In the following steps you will learn how.

Steps to Detect and Correct the Error

  1. First, you have to check the Ring app. Is there an update? If your Ring Doorbell no longer works, for example, if it is turned off completely, the app usually gives you information about why. It can also help you with troubleshooting as long as the app is working and Wi-Fi is available.
  2. Next you should check the power supply. It is possible to run the Ring Doorbell with a battery or connect it to the mains. If you only use the battery, you might just need to charge it. So recharge it and try again to see if the Ring Doorbell works again. Or you can use a spare battery.
Once you have connected the device to the mains, you need to check all the cables that lead to the device. Were they damaged in any way? Sometimes it helps to unplug the Ring Doorbell for a short time and then reconnect it. Also go to your fuse box and check if the FI has flipped the switch.
  3. Now you can check your WLAN network if the Ring Doorbell still does not work again. Is the router working? If so, all lights of your router will light up green. Is something red or blinking? Then something is wrong with the router. Are other devices connected to the WLAN and working properly? Is the cable on the router sitting properly? Is the password for your WLAN up to date or do you have a new one? If you have a new password, you will need to enter it in the app to get your Ring Doorbell connected to your wireless again. If necessary, you can also disconnect the router from the power supply and plug it in again after a short while.

Understanding the App Messages

When your Ring app displays a certain code, sometimes it’s not so easy to understand. For example, your app may tell you that your wireless network has a bad RSSI signal or that the Ring Doorbell is offline.

Most of the time the app will then guide you through the next steps. You just have to follow the instructions.

Rarely the manual does not work or you may not understand it properly. That’s why we have listed a few examples step by step.

Bad RSSI in WLAN, What Now?

RSSI means Received Signal Strength Indicator. It measures the strength of your WLAN. If the app now says that the RSSI is bad, you have to search for the reason why your WLAN reception is weak or disturbed.

This can be something as banal as an aquarium set up near the router. Even walls can block the WLAN signal. The closer the router is to your front door, the better for reception.

In an apartment building, the routers often interfere with each other. A WLAN amplifier, for example, can help here. Unfortunately, electronic devices from the kitchen, such as ovens or microwaves, also often interfere with each other. Therefore, your router should not be located in the kitchen.

Ring Doorbell’s Offline, What Now?

If your Ring Doorbell is offline, this can have several causes. Sometimes there is a surge. It puts a load on the router. But there can also be a power outage.

Then you should just wait a little and try again later. When your other household devices are working again, you can reload the app. Then it should work again. If you get this error message, check if a cable from your router has come loose or you need to re-enter your password.

The fact that your Ring Doorbell is offline can have many causes. Which is why you should just go through the above-mentioned list.

Conclusion

If your Ring Doorbell still doesn’t work after following all the steps in our instructions, you can and should contact support.

He will guide you step by step through the possible causes and if necessary send you a spare part or a stronger cable.

This should definitely solve your problems and you can enjoy all the benefits of the ringer.

If nothing else works, we can recommend these bells as a replacement:
