How the Smart Doorbell makes your life easier

The name “doorbell” doesn’t really do a smart video doorbell justice, because a video doorbell enriches every smart home: It is networked with your other smart devices. Thus, it contributes a lot to the security of your apartment or house.

Its most important function is, of course, that of a normal doorbell. Just like the latter, it tells you what’s going on in front of your door at all times.

Is there someone standing there who wants to visit you? Who? Did he leave a package?

The interesting thing about it is that you can see it everywhere via your smartphone. Whether you’re in the basement, at work, or in Hawaii, anyone who rings your doorbell or even passes close to the door triggers the Doorbell’s activities.

It combines many functions for which you would normally need extra devices. It is a surveillance camera, motion detector and doorbell at the same time – and thus a useful part of your smart home.

Both video doorbells offer these advantages:

Practical: Operation via smartphone possible from anywhere.
Install your doorbell as a smart device: with video function and motion detector.
Connect them to the other smart devices, such as surveillance cameras.
More security: in the subscription more functions, such as event review or saving the recordings over several days.

How does a Smart Doorbell work?

An acoustic signal indicates that something is happening in the entrance area of your house. The doorbell reports this to an app via Wi-Fi. The app then forwards the warning to the smart device.

Usually, this is your smartphone. Of course, any other smart device is suitable, such as a smart speaker. If it has a display, you or someone else can see what’s happening outside the door.

The door can also be opened conveniently from wherever you are. Are you in a far corner of your garden? If you have your smartphone with you, this is no longer a problem for you.

You don’t need much more than the doorbell itself to use it: just an app and working Wi-Fi.

Ring is Amazon

With what it can do, the Doorbell is much more than a normal intercom. Ring was the first to recognize this: The world’s first video doorbell came from this company.

Formerly independent, Ring has been part of Amazon since 2018. In the meantime, there are several different Ring models.

They have always been further developed and modernized. The version with battery even goes into the fourth generation!

This long experience helps Ring to produce really practical video doorbells. Customers appreciate this and choose Ring as one of the most popular manufacturers in the video doorbell industry.

Nest is Google

But there is a big competitor: On a par are the video doorbells called Nest.

They have a similar past and therefore also score with a lot of experience: Nest also initially produced separately before it was acquired by Google.

Therefore, consider both brands as flagships of the industry. Their respective strong parent companies help them with sales and marketing.

Differences and similarities – an initial overview

These assignments may seem incidental if you’re simply looking for the right doorbell for you. But they help you better understand Ring and Nest. Google’s Nest Doorbell, for example, has a few important unique selling points, as does Amazon’s Ring.

Of course, they can be connected with Alexa (Ring) and Google Home (Nest). You can find out whether this also works with the respective competition in the large comparison section below!

Furthermore, there is the product variety. Ring shines here with four different models. Battery-operated or corded, in the pro version or as a professional model: Ring offers the right product for every purpose.

Google seems inferior in this point. But really only at first glance, because Nest can make up for the shortfall in a clever way.

You will only find two different product lines of Nest Doorbells. But they offer more features, even as a standard model, i.e. without a subscription.

Note on the top model from Ring: There is also the Ring “Doorbell Elite”. However, it falls into the professional sector and is therefore not part of this comparison. Above all, the price, features and installation are not intended for private households.

It already becomes clear here that Google’s narrow portfolio has its purpose: The company puts all its expertise into refining the two available models. Consequently, they each offer more features.

If you are interested in Ring, you don’t have to do without it. Many important functions can also be found here!

It’s just that the manufacturer distributes these functions among the different product lines. Therefore, there are more different models here, which makes them more suitable for different target groups.

Great comparison and buying advice: ring vs. nest

The most important point follows from what has been said so far: If you want a quick tip on what suits you, we have to disappoint you.

You alone decide that. It always depends on what you want! It also depends on the conditions that prevail in your smart home.

However, experience has shown that there are a few key points that are decisive for the purchase. Let’s therefore put them at the beginning.

Basically, there are these three differences!

Requirements

The simplest point is what system you already have at home.

Although not mandatory, it makes sense to stick with it: Those who already use Google Home will instinctively take a closer look at Nest Doorbell. Those who are familiar with Alexa, Echo and the like will certainly want to know more about Ring.

Furthermore, both manufacturers offer two fundamentally different models. Here you should decide first: There are the doorbells that are battery operated. And then those that are connected with a cable.

Battery or cable

Imagine that the power fails. Then the battery-powered doorbell will continue to run, while the doorbell with cable will have problems. So you are much more independent with a model that is powered by battery.

In addition, you can install a model with a battery almost anywhere. The only thing that has to fit is the size, which is all that is required for this point.

Wired models, on the other hand, you have to connect to an existing bell system. This is what manufacturers call “hardwired”.

Of course, such an installation is much more difficult than that of a battery-powered model. If you do not have the confidence to do it yourself, you will need an electrician. You will have to add the cost of the electrician to the purchase price.

However, in the rare case that there is no bell system yet, you have nothing to connect it to. If you at least want to use the existing power supply, look for a variant with a power supply unit. Such power supplies fit into any conventional socket.

It is noticeable that only the battery-powered video doorbell from Nest can also be operated with a cable. This feature is optional and gives you more freedom when installing the device and choosing a location. In addition, you have all the advantages when power or Wi-Fi are gone.

The battery in Ring’s Doorbell 4 is replaceable. With Nest, it is permanently installed.

Removable batteries have a decisive advantage: If you want to recharge or forget to recharge, a doorbell without a removable battery will fail. And that is until you have recharged it and can put it back into operation.

After all, it has to go on the charger first. Of course, you can avoid the worst by scheduling the recharge for a time when you’re not expecting visitors.

However, it is not relaxing, at least not as much as dealing with a wired doorbell.

Models with battery – the differences between Ring and Nest:

Value for money or not?

Many buyers also decide based on which model is the cheapest. Therefore, this point is one of the basic considerations.

However, in order to avoid bad purchases, such a decision should not be made hastily. After all, you can only estimate the price of a model correctly when you know more about it. We will therefore come back to this point separately almost at the end of this text.

By way of introduction, just this:

Currently, there are inexpensive models already in the double-digit range. The cheapest is Ring’s Video Doorbell Wired.

The battery-powered version from Ring is already much more expensive. In terms of price, it is in the same range as the Nest Doorbell with battery. In contrast, the Nest Doorbell with cable is not cheaper, but even more expensive.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 is the top model in terms of price.

Technical requirements: What do the models bring to the table?

Overview and basic comparison

Nest

Nest’s battery-powered model is larger and less expensive. It offers more features, including machine learning.

In return, it covers a smaller area in front of the door because its viewing angle is much narrower at 145°.

The Nest Doorbell with cable is slimmer and has the better resolution. It does not offer true machine learning. This was the first model available, formerly also known as Nest Hello.

Ring

Ring Video Doorbell Wired is the smallest model of all. It is also significantly less expensive. Its viewing angle of 155° is exactly between those of the other two models.

The Doorbell Pro 2 is a premium model. Unfortunately, this is not reflected in its coverage angle, which is the smallest of all at 150°. However, like the battery-powered Doorbell 4, it can be operated via WLAN at 5 GHz (wired only 2.4 GHz).

With HD+, the Pro 2 offers more resolution than the other two. These still produce Full HD (1080p), which is a very good resolution for video doorbells.

Design: design, dimensions and appearance

As you can see, Ring’s Doorbell Wired is more compact than the other two doorbells from the manufacturer. So if every millimeter counts in the entrance area of your door and you absolutely want Ring, this version might be interesting for you.

Google Nest’s battery-powered version is significantly higher than all Ring models. In general, you have to plan a bit more space for models with a battery.

Optics and design

In terms of design, Ring is rectangular and not too flat, albeit with rounded edges. With its oval version, Google looks much more modern.

The design is always nickel matt / black for Ring. Additional bezels make the Doorbell Pro 2 a visual highlight.

Google Nest Doorbells are even plainer, but this makes them easy to distinguish. They are either uniformly white (battery) or black (cable).

Therefore, the Ring Doorbell in all versions stands out more next to your door. Not completely unimportant, also for security reasons! If you want a more inconspicuous model, take a look at Nest.

Operation

Both manufacturers design intuitive operation for their visitors. The ring field remains visible in all models from both manufacturers, as does the camera eye.

Can the color of the aperture be changed?

Ring offers more choice on this point. While Google’s design always remains the same, namely snow-white for the battery and black for the wired model, you can design more with Ring.

Video / Camera

A video doorbell stands and falls with its camera. It has to be top-notch so that your doorbell can be used according to your wishes.

First of all: You cannot go wrong with any of the models presented here. Both competitors offer very good results – albeit in a different field.

Color sensor and resolution

All models use color sensors. However, their resolution differs greatly from each other.

For example, Ring’s Doorbell Pro 2 with 1536p and head-to-toe footage shows you pretty much everything that goes on in the entryway of your front door. Resolution is important primarily for the depth of detail in a video or still image.

Only Google’s Nest Doorbell with cable is better: It even reaches the 2K range with 1600 x 1200 p. The Nest Doorbell with battery, on the other hand, offers much less. It has 960 x 1280 pixels. That corresponds to about 1.3 MP.

If it can be a bit less, take a look at the two still missing models from Ring. But even they still offer a very good picture with 1080p each.

Viewpoint

Which one gives you more visibility doesn’t just depend on the level of detail. It also depends on the viewing angle of your video doorbell.

Cameras with a larger angle of view capture more. The smaller the viewing angle, the more the view narrows. Here, Ring models are slightly better than Nest.

The Ring Doorbell Pro 2 sets new standards. As befits a true premium model, it attaches great importance to a very large detection angle. With 150° horizontally and vertically, it provides significantly more insight into what’s happening at your door than any competitor.

Their sister models differ only slightly from each other. With 160° horizontally and 84° vertically, the battery-powered Doorbell 4 offers a better view to the side, but less in height.

The same applies to the inexpensive Ring Doorbell Wired cable model. Only there it is 155° in the horizontal and 90° in the vertical.

Nest’s battery-powered doorbell still offers you a decent field of view with 145° diagonally. The wired model is much better, namely 160° diagonally.

Which one offers you more visibility: A comparison of detection angles for Ring and Nest

Aspect ratio

Here, Google Nest can score with the use of unusual aspect ratios. It uses a different aspect ratio for each model: either 3:4 or 4:3.

This may seem outdated at first glance, and you are certainly used to something different from videos or TV. But keep in mind that your doorbell also has other tasks than a TV.

Normal for video doorbells would be 16:9, which is very wide, but not very high.

So if someone is standing in front of your door, such a camera shows a lot of the upper part of the person. Maybe also what’s happening further back, always at the same height. What’s happening on the ground, on the other hand, you don’t see.

If you are particularly concerned about your safety or if letter carriers often leave packages at your door, you should really be able to see everything. Then Nest models are your first choice.

What is the difference between 3:4 and 4:3?

Just decide whether the height or the width should offer you more. There is a subtle difference between the model with battery and the one with cable: The Nest Doorbell with battery uses 3:4, so it is more high than wide.

In contrast, the wired version offers a ratio of 4:3. Together with the large viewing angle of 160°, this is excellent!

The aspect ratio of Ring’s Video Doorbells: Ring’s normal models only use 16:9, but not the premium version Pro 2. As the manufacturer states, it offers you a complete picture “from head to toe”.

More technical details

HDR

The High Dynamic Range offers a better image in bright backlight. Even if the sun shines on the camera at an unfavorable angle, you can still see your visitors well on bright days.

Google explicitly equips both models of its video doorbells with it.

Night vision

This function is indispensable, after all, your camera has to work at night. In low light, it should still produce a recognizable image: For safety reasons or when late guests drop by, good visibility is extremely important.

Therefore, night vision is found in all presented models. Google also guarantees a visibility of three meters for the battery-powered model.

The Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 even offers a color mode for night vision. However, due to the reduced light, you should hardly expect recordings like during the day. The other Ring models only work in black and white for night vision.

Motion sensor

A motion sensor is just as indispensable. Again, there are no major differences in the comparison of video doorbells.

Zoom

Nest provides a digital zoom for both models. The Nest Doorbell with battery is a bit less powerful, namely only six times. The version with a cable, on the other hand, can even zoom eight times.

Audio

This area includes not only the quality of the sound when speaking and listening. It should be self-evident: After all, you want to understand your visitors, i.e. hear them clearly and distinctly. This works very well with all the models presented here.

The reason: Video doorbells from both manufacturers use noise-canceling microphones. This is important if you live close to a noisy street, for example. Optionally, the rain splashes loudly while you are talking to someone.

You will always be able to understand your visitors when they speak, because there is hardly any background noise. Nest models also suppress echo formation.

You can control other audio settings via an app. For example, you can turn off the microphone completely.

You can also set up a quiet time when you will not be disturbed: Then the bell stays off! This is possible via Google’s Home app as well as the special Nest app. What else the apps can do, you will learn in more detail below.

Decide if and how it rings with you

With a conventional doorbell system, if someone presses the bell, you hear it ring. This is not necessarily the case with video doorbells. The basic function here is to inform you, and a notification is enough for that.

However, it reaches you via your smartphone, so it only rings in your app. If you want to hear the ringing loudly, there are several options. You can continue to use your old ringtone, or you can install a new one.

Chimes

First of all, it depends on what basic model you have. Remember: wired models can be connected to your existing bell system.

Those with a battery, on the other hand, do not need this, you can freely mount them anywhere. The disadvantage is that such models are not in contact with your existing system. If you want to continue using your old chime, it’s not so easy.

Here, the use of chimes, which are sold by both Nest and Ring, is an option. Both manufacturers use different solutions.

The chime at Ring: Chime (fee required)

For a slightly higher price, you can buy a device from Ring that you simply plug into the wall socket: We are talking about Ring Chime. You can even choose from different ringtones via the Ring app.

This is then no longer your original doorbell, but you may even like it better!

By the way, Ring Chime also works when …

you operate doorbells with power supply.
no doorbell exists at all.

However, if you are interested in Ring Doorbell Pro 2, miss your old door chime and really want to keep it, there is a solution. It is complicated, which is why Ring recommends contacting an electrician for it.

But in principle it works! So unlike models with battery, any wired video doorbell can continue to use your existing chime.

The chime at Nest: Nest offers you a chime via Google Home. This allows you to play a chime on any output-enabled smart device.

Video doorbell completely without chime: Is it possible?

Of course. If you don’t want a chime, you can leave it out. Then your smartphone will only inform you via push message when someone rings your doorbell.

The basic functions of a smart video doorbell are the notification of events. So if your friends are at the door, you get a message on your phone – in real time, of course. You can expect this from all models, regardless of the manufacturer.

As with a normal intercom system, you can also talk to visitors and suppliers. Is there a pizza delivery man even though you haven’t ordered anything? Send him on his way! Of course, you can also open the door from wherever you are.

You can also join the stream at any time, so you can see what’s happening outside. Ring calls this feature Live Video, while Nest simply calls it Livestream. In principle, it is the same thing.

Because they are smart devices, doorbells connect to all compatible devices. In the case of Ring, these include other cams, the Alexa voice assistant, and Ring Alarm.

If available, you can have the picture displayed on the screen of an Echo Show speaker, for example. This is not only convenient, but also makes sense for several people in the household. Then your kids or your partner can also look through the camera’s eye.

What to do if that’s not enough for you?

If you want more, there are two options. You can take out a subscription, more on that in a moment. Or you can look to the competition to see if they offer more by default.

Nest clearly has the edge here. Google’s flagship offers significantly more standard features even without a subscription!

The last function is also available on Ring, it is called Quick Replies. In a limited version, it can be used without a subscription. However, the subscription offers more options for Quick Replies.

Therefore, this function can be counted both as a standard and as an additional function in Ring devices.

Nest Doorbells can do even more. But everything we call now depends on the model. For example, a notification of movements in the alarm area is included by battery-powered models. In the wired model, on the other hand, you need the subscription for it.

The most interesting feature is probably the intelligent function of the doorbell. Here, Nest is testing what’s possible: Is an animal running through your garden, or a human being?

A doorbell detects this and sends you a corresponding message. It can also report packages or vehicles, which is convenient for deliveries.

Once again, the wired Nest model lags behind slightly. For example, no video is stored here, only still images. Animal and vehicle alerts are omitted altogether. However, both Nest models recognize people.

Event-based versus around-the-clock: Nest’s wired model has the option to record around the clock, at least in the subscription. The battery-powered model cannot offer that – even if you install it with a cable. Here, the recording is always event-based.

In addition to the basic functions that every doorbell must be able to handle, Ring also offers interesting additional features. They are not always available for a fee.

Of course, you can expect that from the premium Pro 2 model. But the other models also have a few things on board that are not standard for video doorbells.

Quick Replies (full)

With Ring Abo Protect you can not only tell your visitors something. For example, that you are too busy to receive them.

You can also hear what the visitors said in response, because Ring Doorbell with Abo records their answers for you.

Bird’s eye view

When the motion sensor strikes, you receive a message. But where does this take place – right outside your front door or ten meters away?

If you want to know for sure, Ring’s premium model might be something for you: Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 is the only model that offers you a unique bird’s eye view.

3D motion detector

Another exclusive feature of the above-mentioned model is the 3D motion detector. You can learn more about the distance, size and direction of movement of the object. Moreover, the Doorbell Pro 2 tells you how fast the object is moving.

Therefore, the Pro version works well as part of your overall security system.

Event Review Pre-Roll: What Happened Before

Imagine the doorbell rings. You turn on your cell phone to see who is visiting you. But there is no one to be seen.

What happened? Ringing prank or unpleasant contemporaries you don’t want to get to know at all?

It would be good to know this, after all, your further actions depend on it! Here the pre-roll function is helpful, because it shows you what happened in the seconds before.

Normally, the doorbell with battery has four seconds of pre-roll. This should be enough for you to get an idea of the situation.

Where are the differences: In the model with battery, low power consumption is useful. Therefore, only normal pre-roll is available here. The resolution is lower, which saves the battery.

Since this point is not so important for the wired models, they have Advanced Pre-Roll. That means: Pre-Roll in HD resolution, of course also in color!

As Ring itself announces, you can only get this feature for battery-powered models from Ring.

The time for which the respective model stores is also important. While the normal models only store four seconds, the premium Pro 2 model stores six seconds.

Additional functions in the subscription

Both manufacturers offer subscriptions that you can pay monthly or annually. This gives you the opportunity to use the full potential of your doorbell!

You can unlock additional functions to adapt the video doorbell to your personal needs. You should take a close look here so that you don’t regret anything later.

For example, if the Nest Doorbell’s three hours of recording are not enough, subscribe to Nest Aware. This allows you to keep track of who visited you at any given time for much longer. This applies to both Nest models.

With the Basic subscription, you can record up to 30 days of event-based video. In the Plus version it is even double, so 60 days.

The more expensive Nest Aware Plus subscription also allows you to save data around the clock, i.e. without gaps. However, this only applies to the model with a cable. A Nest Doorbell with a battery will not be able to offer this even with the Plus plan.

Cost of subscriptions to Ring:

How does it work:

Nest Doorbells are capable of learning. With your help, they remember faces and recognize them the next time you visit. You will then receive an appropriate notification.

How adaptive your doorbell is, you will notice with time. The messages may contain errors at the beginning, but later this will be reduced.

For this to work, you need a database in addition to a Nest Doorbell. Here you manage the faces and make sure that the machine remembers them by naming them.

Of course, you don’t have to do this: for example, if you don’t have the person’s consent. Or if it’s a supplier you don’t know if they’ll ever ring your doorbell again.

How to train the algorithm:

If someone you don’t know is standing in front of the door, your Doorbell will let you know. The more you teach the algorithm, the faster it learns to recognize the faces better the next time.

However, if they are indeed unknown faces, you can have them deleted by designating them as unknown. Nest will remove these faces from the database.

Install app

Now download the Ring app if this is your first Ring device. Install it and open an account in it.
