You’re looking for a smart security camera that sees everything? Then the modern security cameras with motion tracking are just the thing! Due to their great freedom of movement, these cameras can scan their entire surroundings for movements and follow them.

This makes it possible to monitor a much bigger area than would be possible with a single camera.

These security cameras are not only used for security when you are not at home, but have also established themselves as a baby cams or pet cameras.

These are the best security cameras with motion tracking:

After we’ve introduced these cameras in detail, we’ll look at the exact difference between motion detection and motion tracking.

The Best Security Cameras with Motion Tracking

The computer capacity of small electronic devices is constantly increasing. So it is no wonder that a device as small as a security camera can master a complicated skill like following movements.

Today, this feature has become so normal that there are many brands that offer these cameras and the prices also correspond to similar Smart Home devices. Fortunately, the days when such special security devices cost a small fortune are over.

In the following, the best security cameras with motion tracking are presented. Our evaluation is based on the most important features that such a security camera should have. This is beside a very good motion tracking of course also the video quality, the ease of operation, other features and their price. The order of the list also matches the order of our ranking.

EZVIZ C6T: 1080p Full HD, Wifi, Smart Tracking

This smart security camera from EZVIZ* is our winner in the price-performance ratio. It is also compatible with Amazon Alexa!

Its great packages of features and its performance are really convincing and with the fair price, this security camera is really ingenious.

Design

The Ezviz C6T is basically a sphere with a diameter of 4 inches. It is slightly flattened on the underside so that it does not roll away when standing and thus its height is reduced to 3.5 inches. At just 220 g, it is also a real lightweight. Because of these small dimensions, you can hide it really well.

On its backside, there are connectors for power and LAN and the slot for the MicroSD card. Now only a USB interface would be perfect, but thanks to the Wifi compatibility we can actually do without it.

Video Quality

This security camera also offers the now widespread 1080p Full-HD standard. The recorded videos have a frame rate of 15 frames per second. If this is not enough for you and you prefer smoother videos with slightly lower quality, you can reduce the picture quality to 720p, which gives you 30 frames per second.

The viewing angle without rotation is 92°. If the rotational movement in the horizontal and vertical axis is taken into account, it has a viewing angle of 360° horizontally and 180° vertically. So it can see everything around it!

Audio Quality and Night Vision

With the help of infrared LEDs, the security camera has a range of 10 meters even at night. A small microphone and a built-in loudspeaker permit the function as an intercom system.

Memory

You can either save your recorded videos locally using a micro SD card or via a cloud service. The advantage of the Micro-SD card is that you only have one-time expenses and can keep the videos confidential. Especially when it comes to recordings in non-private environments, this is usually the only option.

With the paid cloud service, you can save your videos either for a maximum of seven days or for twice the price for 30 days. You can then download the videos at any time during this period.

Installation and Setup

As with most other smart home devices today, installation and setup are very simple. In principle, all you have to do is download the Ezviz app, create an account there, register the camera with the app and then connect it to your wifi.

Within the app, you then have many possibilities to configure your camera. For example, there is a fingerprint login to keep uninvited guests away. You can also set when the camera should notify you and how sensitive the motion detection is.

For security cameras with motion detection, you normally have to set the zones in which the motion detector should trigger. Since this camera can track motion, it is not necessary to create these motion zones.

Notifications and Alarms

Very important with a security camera is also the way how and when your camera alerts you. With the Ezviz C6T, you always get an instant notification when the camera has detected a movement. Within seconds you can watch the corresponding video and react accordingly.

Other App Features

You don’t have to wait for the motion detector to activate to record a video. This can also be done directly from within the app. You can even upload the recorded videos directly within the app on YouTube!

The app itself is very intuitively structured and easy to use. In principle, you operate the entire camera via the app. Here you can watch your recorded videos, download them and view and change all settings of the camera.

Pros:

  • Slim, modern design
  • 1080p Full HD
  • Fingerprint login
  • Night vision
  • Alexa compatible
  • Panorama 360° viewing angle
  • Local (microSD) and cloud storage (7 and 30 days option)

Cons:

  • MicroSD card not included
  • Cloud storage not included

Wyze Cam Pan

Check Price:

The Wyze Cam Pan* is not only meant to be a security camera, but also to record important moments in your life. With its very low price it still delivers a lot of great features and a very good video quality.

What we especially like about this camera is the possibility to send the camera on patrol, so to speak. You can set different zones in the field of view in which the camera will search for moving objects. Because even the best camera with motion tracking is of no use to you if it is only set up in one direction and everything that happens behind it is not noticed… That can’t happen to you with this camera!

Design

Pure security cameras are a bit smaller and more inconspicuous than the Wyze Cam Pan with its rectangular white design. Its size is 60 x 60 x 128 mm and the whole camera weighs about 250 g.

Its rectangular body sits on a round turntable. The camera in the upper third of the body can move 93° vertically. This, coupled with the horizontal range of 360° and a rotation speed of 110° per second, means that nothing escapes the camera – no matter how fast someone or something moves.

Around the lens, there are 6 individual infrared LEDs, which allow the camera to record HD videos at night.

The microphone is also located at the bottom of the camera. A small loudspeaker is mounted on the back of the camera, which also provides a 2-way audio system. So you can talk to someone in the room via app.

The Micro SD card slot is also located on the underside, allowing you to save the recorded videos locally. Next to it you will find the input of the Mini USB power supply.

Video and Audio Quality

The built-in camera has a 2-megapixel sensor and can record videos in 1080p Full HD. During the day it shoots at 15 frames per second and at night at 10 frames per second. As with all other cameras that realize their night vision with infrared LEDs, the video you record at night is of course in grayscale.

Even though the microphone of the camera is very small, the recorded sounds are very clear and understandable. The only thing we noticed here is that the audio signal is sometimes slightly offset to the video signal. So if something happens in the video that produces a noise, you can only hear the noise a little bit later.

Motion Tracking

When the camera is in motion tracking mode, it will respond to any motion and follow it as long as it can see it. With her 360° viewing angle, it only loses sight of the object when it hides behind an obstacle. The ingenious thing about this camera is that you can send the camera to a patrol mode in which it independently searches the room. Many other cameras with motion tracking do not have this feature and are more or less useless if the moving object does not come directly into the field of view of the camera.

You can then set the camera to follow the movement of the person or pet and highlight the movement with a green rectangle in the live feed and also in the saved video. This is really handy when it comes to very small movements or objects. If you adjust the sensitivity of the motion detector at the beginning, it’s very practical, because sometimes you don’t even know what movement the camera has triggered.

The only disadvantage you have here is that the camera can really turn so fast to follow the movement that the image becomes a little blurry during this movement. However, the camera does not move all the time, but only when the movement runs the risk of escaping from the angle of view. You can also reduce the rotation speed, which is set to the maximum of 110° per second by default, to improve this effect.

Storage and Playback

Another highlight of this camera is the free cloud storage space for 14 days which is included in the purchase price. Most other systems work with paid subscriptions. 14-day storage is quite a lot when compared to a Micro SD card. With a 64GB memory card, you’d get by for about a week. So you’d need at least 128 GB to get the 14 days of storage in the cloud.

The playback of recorded videos and the Livestream within the app are very intuitive and easy to use. You can choose to playback the entire recording or choose between recorded events. The thumbnails of the event recordings are the times at which the motion alarm was triggered.

The Wyze app is available for iOS and Android. The menu navigation and operation are very user-friendly and also support a frustration-free control in live mode. Unfortunately, the app is the only way to control the camera and access the videos at the moment. At the moment there is no web-portal with which you can access the videos or the camera from your PC.

Smart Home Integration

You can also view the image from this smart security camera on a Fire TV or an Alexa device with display. Via Alexa you can also, with restrictions, operate it. The camera is also IFTTT compatible, allowing you to program smart events. You can define different triggers for the camera: Movements, noises, time of day, smoke detector or CO2 alarm. So you could turn on the camera automatically whenever you go to bed or go to work. You can also connect them to your smart smoke detector and immediately check the situation as soon as it detects smoke. The possibilities with IFTTT are now limited only by your creativity.

Pros:

  • Excellent price
  • 14-day free cloud storage space
  • Good night vision
  • 2-way audio system
  • Very good video and audio quality
  • Compatible with IFTTT, Alexa and Co
  • Many features

Cons:

  • No web portal

Nooie Wifi Camera

Even though the Nooie Wifi camera* is actually intended as a baby or pet camera, it can also be used as a general security camera with excellent motion tracking. It has a very high-quality image sensor that records videos in 1080p Full HD resolution – even at night thanks to the built-in infrared LEDs.

Features

Here is a list of the best features of the Nooie Wifi camera:

  • 360° motion tracking: The camera can rotate in both the horizontal and vertical axes and can thus really see every square centimeter.
  • Automatic motion tracking: The Nooie camera follows movements independently while it is recording videos. You can also use the app to set when and how exactly it should follow the movement. By default, it does this as soon as the motion sensor is triggered.
  • Motion and Noise Sensors: You can not only be notified by the camera when it detects motion but also when it detects louder noises.
  • 24/7 video recording: Even if you are on vacation, you can be sure that the camera has everything under control because it continuously records videos and alerts you as soon as something happens. If you don’t have your mobile phone ready in case of an emergency, you can still watch the video afterward and watch the movement being followed.
  • Very good night vision: The Nooie Wifi camera has two infrared LEDs with 940 nm wavelength each. This allows her to record videos at night as if it were daytime. The sensors have a range of 10 m even at night.
  • Intercom system: The camera can also be used as an intercom system thanks to a built-in microphone and a loudspeaker. If you should actually use the camera as a pet camera, for example, you can calm your pet down when it walks nervously through the room or interact with it during your lunch break.
  • Local and cloud storage: The recorded videos can be stored either on a Micro-SD card directly on the camera or on the cloud. In the cloud the videos are kept for 7 days before they are deleted.
  • App control: Use the mobile app from Nooie to control the camera. Not only can you access the videos, but you can also operate the camera directly and pan through the room.

Design

The camera itself is very inconspicuously constructed so that it is not directly noticeable. The only thing you might notice about it is a small LED that indicates whether it is turned on or not.

Power is supplied via a micro USB cable and a microSD card slot is also located on the back. But the slot is a bit hidden and only appears when you tilt the camera a little bit upwards.

The Nooie Wifi camera has a size of 124.41 x 77.98 mm. The body of the camera is held in a grey-white, the middle piece, where also the lens is built-in, is black.

The camera itself has a field of view of 101°, but can rotate 355° horizontally and 94° vertically, allowing it to see everything around it!

Installation and Setup

The first step in installing the Nooie Wifi camera is to connect it to your Wifi. You do this with the app that comes with iOS and Android systems. As soon as you have connected the camera to the Wifi via the app, the status LED will light up.

Within the app, you can make various settings and operate the camera completely. You can also share the live feed with someone else who installed the app. This feature is of course especially useful for other household members such as your own partner.

The camera’s maximum viewing angle gives you a lot of choices when positioning. However, the positioning depends strongly on the primary application. Therefore, the location where you set up the camera will certainly differ if you want to watch your baby or pet. If you simply want to monitor the entrance area of your apartment or the living room of your house, a location where the camera has the widest possible viewing angle is recommended. The camera itself can either be placed anywhere or mounted on a wall or ceiling using the supplied installation plate.

App & Cloud

As I said, you need the app to access the camera’s feed. The app is very intuitive and easy to use. All functions and options are very easy to reach and well described. We even think that Nooie’s app is one of the best and stands out from many others in its handling and simple explanations of the different settings.

Fortunately, the times are over when you buy an expensive device and can’t get along with the software at all! This has really changed a lot since the whole topic “Smart Home” has moved more into the mainstream focus.

But not only the app itself, but also the software leaves nothing to be desired. We have not discovered any operating errors and the regular updates prevent security gaps or annoying operating errors.

You can also use the app to manage and operate multiple cameras. In a large household, it is, therefore, possible to install this camera more often and use it as a baby cam, pet camera and security camera.

Operating the camera via the app is almost a child’s play. In the live stream you can rotate and pan the camera with movements of your fingers.

As with many other security cameras today, the Nooie Wifi camera offers 2 types of video storage: a micro SD card or a cloud storage subscription. If you choose the Micro-SD variant, you will definitely be cheaper in the long run although you will have more costs in the beginning because you should buy a very large Micro SD card. On the other hand, the cloud subscription for a few bucks a month is super handy as you don’t have to worry about anything else.

Pros:

  • Outstanding night vision even in pitch dark nights.
  • Very good app
  • The alarm threshold of the motion and acoustic sensors can be set individually.

Cons:

  • MicroSD card not included

AKASO Wifi Camera

The Wifi camera from AKASO* is a smart security camera that follows movements. Like many other cameras of its kind, it has a panoramic view with no blind spots – you can’t hide from her all-seeing eye!

The most important features of this smart security camera with motion tracking are listed below:

  • Automatic motion tracking: The camera can automatically follow moving objects or people in real time. This allows you to monitor a very large field of view with only one camera. With classic security cameras with a static field of view, you would need multiple cameras to monitor this area.
  • Customizable notifications: You can set the threshold at which a movement is reported and thus protect yourself from false reports. Due to the fast notifications, you don’t lose any time when you need to react quickly in an emergency.
  • Remote control via the app: If the camera notifies you that a suspicious movement has been detected in your home, you can also operate the camera remotely via the app. Using the intuitive controls, you can also perfectly control the camera via the app and see exactly what you want.
  • Complete panoramic view: The camera really sees everything! It can rotate 355° horizontally and 65° vertically and with its camera, it covers the complete three-dimensional space in which it stands with its own viewing angle of 130°.
  • Night vision: The camera records videos in 1080p Full HD not only during the day. It can also record videos at night in this resolution thanks to its infrared LEDs.
  • Intercom: The 2-way audio system allows you to interact directly with someone in your home. It doesn’t always have to be an intruder that the camera reports to you, the babysitter, your pet or a cleaning lady will also trigger the motion alarm.
  • Continuous video recording: With the camera, you can continuously record videos and store them locally on a micro SD card, for example. Once the card is full, new videos are saved over the oldest ones. So if you want to look back into the past as long as possible, you should choose a Micro SD card that is as large as possible.

Installation and Setup

First, you have to download the app and create an account. Once you have done this, you can mount the camera and connect it to the app. There you can establish a connection with your Wifi. This lets you access your camera, watch its videos, or control it live from anywhere in the world with Internet access.

  • Not controllable via PC

Difference between Motion Detection and Motion Tracking

Modern security cameras are smart and save users a lot of time, for example by alerting them only when they see something interesting. These smart features include motion detection and motion tracking.

Sometimes these two features are confused or even interchanged, although they offer two very different functions. In the following, we will briefly explain the two features and what a camera can do with them.

Motion Detection

When motion is detected, the security camera detects whether something is moving in its angle of vision. This is done either by infrared rays or by evaluating the optical image using internal software.

Most security cameras with this feature can be individually configured to monitor which area of the field of view they should and should not monitor via motion detection. This allows you to hide a sidewalk or road so that the camera does not constantly notify you that something is moving.

In addition, the sensitivity of when the sensor starts up can be adjusted. When I set up my first camera with this feature, I was amazed by how many animals are out at night! With some fine-tuning, I could filter out all these false messages and only show the movements of people.

Motion detection has become a standard feature of modern smart home security cameras. For this feature the camera does not need any special constructional features (except for the motion sensors of course).

Motion Tracking

A camera that can track motion must be able to move accordingly. It must be able to turn and tilt. A requirement for the tracking of movements is, of course, the detection of movements. This means that all cameras with motion tracking also automatically have motion detection.

As soon as the camera detects a movement, it follows it so that it does not come out of its angle of view. The bigger the radius of movement of the camera, the longer it can follow the movement and thus give more clues about what the movements mean or what an intruder has done.

The obvious question, of course, is what happens when two moving objects suddenly come into view? How does the camera decide which movement to follow? For most security cameras with motion tracking, this problem is solved by two rules. The camera always follows the first movement it detects in a given time window, and if they come into view in that time window at the same time, it follows the larger object. So if a person with a dog comes into the picture at the same time, the camera will follow the person and not the dog.

Interesting is also what the camera does as soon as the object does not move anymore.

Some cameras then stay in place with the same angle of view where they stopped following the movement. However, there are also models that return to their starting position which can be set beforehand. However, this has the disadvantage that resourceful people simply stop for a certain period of time until the camera loses interest and pans somewhere else. As a criminal, I would of course still not rely on it, since the motion detector has long since been activated and sent to the homeowner.

Summary

This article explained the difference between motion detection and motion tracking and presented the best security cameras with motion tracking.

As you can see, this technology is not only brilliant, but also very affordable! The first time I had thought about this topic, I thought that cameras with this function are professional devices that also require a corresponding budget. Fortunately, we have arrived in the Smart Home age, where such features are available to everyone and are extremely easy to install and use.

If motion tracking is not so important to you and you only want to monitor a small field of view, such as your front door area, normal security cameras are probably better.
