Roombas have batteries perfectly adapted to their needs. To maximize the life of these batteries, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Before using your Roomba for the first time, allow it to fully charge overnight and for at least 12 hours. Normally the duration of a normal charge is only about two hours, but it is important that the battery is completely and intensively charged at the beginning. This has a very positive effect on the lifespan of the battery.

In this article, you will learn how you can increase the life of the Roomba battery even after the first charge and in the end, we will answer regularly asked questions about the Roomba battery.

Care & Maintainance Tips for your Roomba Battery

In addition to a proper first charge of the battery, there are a few other helpful tips to increase the lifespan of the Roomba battery:

  • Use the Roomba often. The built-in battery delivers the best performance and the longest life if it is charged and discharged frequently.
  • Only use iRobot batteries* (iRobot is the manufacturer of Roomba).
  • As long as you don’t use the vacuum cleaner robot, it should be plugged into the charging station. If the battery is not charged for a long time and is completely empty, its lifespan will be reduced.
  • The battery or the complete robot itself should never become too hot or humid.
  • After one cleaning cycle, the robot should be recharged immediately.
  • The less power your Roomba needs to clean, the less charge it uses. This means that you should keep its mechanical parts free from obstructions such as hair or other dirt.
  • Before you go on vacation, you should fully charge the battery once and then store the robot in a cool, dry place until you are back.
  • If your Roomba has not been at its base station for a long time, it will automatically initiate a special 16-hour charge cycle. This charging cycle prolongs its life and is completely normal.

Frequently Asked Questions about Charging a Roomba

How do I know if my Roomba is charged?

Roombas try to save energy wherever they can. Their status LEDs therefore only light up for one minute at a time and then go off automatically. If you want to check its status, press the CLEAN key once. The status lamp will then light up again.

When the Roomba is charging, the status LED pulsates amber. When fully charged, it glows green continuously. If the Roomba is currently in its 16-hour charging cycle as mentioned above, the Status LED will pulsate amber very quickly.

Why is my Roomba flashing red?

If your Roombas status light is red or flashing red, the battery is either completely empty or too empty to allow a cleaning cycle. If this is the case, you must give your vacuum robot some time to recharge before it can start again.

How do I reset my Roomba battery?

In the course of time, the cleaning cycles of your robot vacuum cleaner are getting shorter and shorter and it has to return to its charging station more and more frequently. But that doesn’t mean you have to buy a new battery right away! By regularly resetting the Roomba battery, you can significantly increase its life and restore its old performance.

Use these steps to reset the Roomba battery:

  1. Press the CLEAN button to wake up or turn on your Roomba.
  2. Press and hold the SPOT and DOCK buttons for 10 seconds. You’ll hear a confirming sound afterward.
  3. After resetting the battery, you should recharge Roomba for at least 12 hours before using it again.

What does the orange flashing light on the Roomba mean?

If the status LED on your Roomba flashes orange, it is in a special 16-hour charging cycle. This is normal and should not worry you. Wait for this time and look again at its status LED. It should be green now.

How many years does a Roomba battery last?

2-4 years with normal use. If you take good care of your Roomba and reset the battery regularly, the Roomba battery can last for 5 years.

Can a Roomba battery be replaced?

Yes, if the battery in your Roomba actually needs to be replaced at some point, you can buy a new one* and replace it. How this works in detail is somewhat different between the models. If you have misplaced your user manual, you will find many manuals and videos for the individual models online.

Should I always leave the Roomba connected?

Yes. The battery lives longer when charged. It doesn’t mind getting recharged frequently – rather the opposite. Therefore you should always leave your Roomba at the charging station while it is not working. The only exception would be vacations. If you’re not around for a while, recharge your Roomba completely and store it in a cool, dry place until you get back.

How often should I use my Roomba?

Every day or every other day. If you use your Roomba frequently you get several advantages. Firstly, the battery likes to be charged frequently and secondly, not so much dirt accumulates on the Roombas mechanism that could interfere.
