Ring doorbells are extremely popular and provide greater security and the function of watching a picture of the area outside the front door.

There are many Ring Video Doorbell variants. The following are wireless: Ring Peephole Cam, Ring Video Doorbell 1-4. Ring Video Doorbell Elite is not wireless because it uses PoE (Power over Ethernet) and does not use a battery for power like the other models.

These ring video doorbells are wireless:

When choosing the best model of wireless ring doorbell for you, consider the following points:

  1. Wireless power supply via battery or rechargeable battery
  2. Compatibility with your smartphone and smart home network, if applicable.
  3. Video resolution, viewing angle/range, detection
  4. Memory
  5. Special features like IR night vision, voice control independent of smartphone

Which Ring Video Doorbell is best for you and what alternatives there are, you will learn in this article.

Wireless Ring Doorbells

The first smart doorbells had to be connected to the cable of the existing doorbell with a lot of effort, which was possible in rented apartments only after contacting the landlord. These times are over, there is now a wide range of wireless video doorbells, which we present to you below.

The WLAN video doorbells are also called Ring Doorbells because the Californian company has been manufacturing and selling smart WLAN video doorbells called “Ring Doorbells” since 2012. The market leader now offers four different models of wireless video doorbells, which will be presented first. Various competitors have also developed interesting models in the meantime, which will follow.

Ring Peephole Cam

The Ring Peephole Cam* is one of the newer models of Ring video doorbells. It works wirelessly with a rechargeable battery and offers the best overview of what is happening in front of your door with its 180-degree camera viewing angle. The images of the events in front of your door are transmitted to you with a high resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels pin sharp.

This high resolution is also intended to ensure good image transmission for special use cases. For example, the Ring Peephole Cam can be paired with devices that provide visual assistance to seniors living in the home.

Ring Peephole Cam is further fully compatible, with this Ring Doorbell you can use the full potential of smart video doorbells: It is compatible with Amazon Alexa and the Apple HomeKit, with the Fire Tablet and with IFTTT. Via IFTTT, it is compatible with all other smart home devices available on the open market.

Via IFTTT, you can set all kinds of defaults for certain scenarios: If you use the Phillips Hue lamp system in your house/apartment, the smart doorbell can be paired with the Phillips Hue lamps. Then you can set the light in the hallway, for example, to turn on when the doorbell is pressed. For people who are hard of hearing, other visual doorbell signals can also be provided and set. If you use Alexa voice assistance in your home, you can have the Amazon Echo Show show you a picture of the visitor and communicate with them if necessary. In addition, the Ring Peephole Cam can be paired with other Ring devices, such as a Ring Spotlight Cam*.

In addition, Ring Peephole Cam is also equipped with knock detection technology. Ring Peephole Cam also notifies you on your mobile device when someone knocks on your door. When you open the notification, a live video will be displayed, you can then communicate with the knocking person via video and intercom.

The Ring Peephole Cam and all other Ring Doorbells are stored exclusively in a cloud on the Ring server. In this Ring cloud, the recordings are stored for 30 days. Today, every burglar knows the video doorbells and usually tears them off the door first. With other devices, the burglar also takes the evidential video recordings with him, which you can get from the ring cloud with ring doorbells and present to the police.

Ring Peephole Cam Features:

  • Power supply: Rechargeable battery (connection to bell cable would also be possible)
  • Battery life: 5 months on average
  • Compatibility: With other Ring devices, Alexa, Android app, Fire tablets, Fire TV sticks, IFTTT, iOS app.
  • Video resolution: 1920 × 1080 pixels
  • Viewing angle/range: 180
  • Detection: video with defined recording area + knock detection
  • Storage: 30 days (paid cloud storage only)

Ring Video Doorbell

If you don’t have a large smart home network installed in your home yet, but just want to test the convenience of a wireless Wi-Fi video doorbell, the simple Ring Video Doorbell* might be the right entry-level model for you.

It has everything a comfortable Ring Video Doorbell needs:

It brings more security to your home and, with the mobile app, gives you control over who is at your door even from out of town.

In addition, the Ring Video Doorbell also offers a complete overview of the entire entrance area with its comfortable 180-degree field of view.

The recordings with the 720p resolution are not as razor-sharp as those of the higher-resolution models, but they are perfectly sufficient to identify visitors. The motion detection works with infrared technology and offers some individual setting options.

The installation of the video doorbell is so simple that it can be done by the user without professional help. The only flaw is the internal, fixed battery: you can only charge the battery by taking the whole doorbell off the wall and charging it. Still, a model with a good price-performance ratio.

Ring Video Doorbell Features:

  • Power supply: Rechargeable battery (also hardwired on request, with connection to the bell cable)
  • Battery life: 6 months on average, since the battery is not removable, the whole bell must be removed and charged
  • Compatibility: Android, OS, iOS
  • Video resolution: 720p HD video
  • Viewing angle/range: 180
  • Detection: video, adjustable motion detection with infrared technology
  • Storage: 30 days (paid cloud storage only)
  • Special Features: Intercom function, IR night vision, 24/7 live recording

Ring Video Doorbell 4

Ring Video Doorbell 4* is the further development of Ring Video Doorbell 3, which offers more convenience.

Ring Video Doorbell 4 offers good sharp HD videos with its 1080p resolution, recorded with a 160° viewing angle.

Motion detection with infrared technology is also offered here, which you can set individually.

The power supply has been made much more user-friendly in the Ring Video Doorbell 4: The battery can be easily removed for charging.

The installation of the Doorbell 4 is also so simple that the Ring company recommends self-installation by the user.

Ring Video Doorbell 4 Features:

  • Power supply: Rechargeable battery (hard-wired connection to the bell cable is also possible)
  • Battery life: 6 months on average, the battery pack can be removed from the bell housing and charged
  • Compatibility: Android, OS, iOS
  • Video resolution: 1080p HD video
  • Viewing angle / range: 160

Ring Video Doorbell Elite

The name says it all: The Ring Video Doorbell Elite* has more to offer than its two predecessor models.

For example, the motion detection with the widest range of functions: The Ring Video Doorbell Elite works with a pixel-based technology that allows you to customize the motion detection very individually. The video resolution also offers 1080p and thus really sharp images that are captured with a range of 160°.

The power supply has been solved in a completely new way: Ring Video Doorbell Elite gets its power via the Ethernet cable. This means that this video doorbell never has to be recharged and cannot fail because it was not recharged in time. The downside of this great solution is that it is not easy to install, which is why Ring recommends professional installation when it comes to the Doorbell Elite. The design of the Ring Video Doorbell Elite can reconcile with this extra effort: The video doorbell is offered in chic, matte silver and also in noble satin nickel.

Ring Video Doorbell Elite Features:

  • Power supply: Power-over-Ethernet (Ring recommends installation by professionals)
  • Compatibility: Android, OS, iOS
  • Video resolution: 1080p
  • Viewing angle / range: 160
  • Detection: video, user-definable motion detection due to pixel-based technology

Other WLAN Video Doorbell

Ctronics video doorbell

If you’re also satisfied with the normal, plain, unobtrusive design of a video doorbell, you’ll get away with the Ctronics WLAN video doorbell with a camera much cheaper than with the Elite doorbell we just presented.

Still, a model that does its job wirelessly and is perfectly adequate for small homes and apartments: The Ctronics video doorbell* offers all the features of a video doorbell, a sufficient video resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a fairly large image angle of 166°.

The ring signal is not only forwarded to a smartphone, but also to the included wireless receiver. So even if you are not yet equipped with a smart home network, use Amazon Alexa, the Apple HomeKit, etc., you do not have to carry the smartphone around with you all the time to hear the bell.

If there are hard-of-hearing people in your house or household, you can buy up to seven wireless receivers to install a bell in every room. This way you won’t get poor, because each wireless doorbell receiver you buy as an extension of your Ctronics wireless video doorbell.

Ctronics Video Doorbell Features:

  • Power supply: Rechargeable battery (optional hardwiring via power supply of existing bell).
  • Battery life: 4 months on average, battery charges via USB (USB charging cable included, AC adapter can be ordered separately)

  • Video resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels (720p)

AWOW Video Doorbell

Another wireless video doorbell for smaller houses and apartments. Like the other smart doorbells, it rings your smartphone and shows you who is at your door.

The AWOW Video Doorbell* also allows you to detect and communicate with visitors when you are outside your home.

The AWOW video doorbell can be operated with the corresponding apps for Android or iOS. As with the other affordable video doorbells, pairing with other devices is not possible, so you can only be reached via this doorbell if you have your smartphone with you. Like the Ctronics video doorbell, you can also expand the AWOW Video Doorbell with several external doorbell receivers, but unfortunately the first wireless receiver is not included.

On the other hand, the image resolution of this inexpensive video doorbell is surprisingly good at 1920 × 1080 pixels, and the viewing angle of 166 degrees is larger than that of the Ring Video Doorbell 2 and the Ring Video Doorbell Elite.

AWOW Video Doorbell Features:

  • Power supply: Battery
  • Battery life: 5 to 6 months on average
  • Compatibility: Android App and iOS
  • Video resolution: 1920 × 1080 pixels

Blink Video Doorbell

With the Blink Video Doorbell*, Amazon is just introducing a new development that should revolutionize the video doorbell market.

It offers the usual app notifications when it rings and motion detection, but also 1080p HD video, two-way audio, and Alexa compatibility.

If you want the Amazon Blink Video Doorbell to operate wirelessly, installation is very simple, a mounting kit is included.

Only the technical details reveal why the Amazon Blink Video Doorbell is so inexpensive:

The horizontal viewing range of 135° is much closer than most other vendors. The included two AA lithium batteries are not rechargeable and have to be bought anew every time they are changed. This continuously causes new costs and is also problematic from a climate protection point of view.

When purchasing a single Blink Video Doorbell, video recording capability and two-way audio are only available briefly when the doorbell has just been pressed or the camera has captured a motion event. To use live video and two-way audio on demand and as desired, the Amazon Blink Video Doorbell must either be connected to the power supply of the existing doorbell or paired with a Sync Module. In any case, to use the Amazon Blink Video Doorbell with Alexa, a Sync Module is required and must be purchased separately. To record and store video locally, you will need to separately purchase a Blink Sync Module 2, a USB flash drive, and a USB flash drive with a maximum capacity of 256 GB that matches the flash drive.

Otherwise, the video recordings are only stored in the Blink Cloud, which is available as a free trial until July 2022. After that, you can only access the recordings if you take out a subscription for the Blink Cloud. With this subscription and a Blink Sync Module 2, you can then watch the recordings on your computer without additional fees.

Blink Video Doorbell Features:

  • Power supply: Battery (optional hard wiring via power supply of existing bell).
  • Battery life: no information (“long battery life”), after expiration new batteries must be inserted each time
  • Compatibility: Android, Apple iOS, Alexa
  • Video resolution: 1080p
  • Viewing angle/range: 135
  • Recognition: Video
  • Storage: 30 days (paid cloud storage only)
  • Special Features: Infrared night vision, two-way audio

Google Nest Video Doorbell Hello

Already some time on the market, but still good.

At the time, it was also immediately tested by the Dutch Consumentenbond – and came off as the best in all functions, ahead of the models from market leader Ring, which were also tested. “Best picture quality, good sound, easy to operate,” was the verdict of the Dutch partners of the German Stiftung Warentest.

The Nest Video Doorbell Hello* is equipped with a NC5100US security camera and works wirelessly with battery and Wi-Fi. The small bell Nest video doorbell Hello also offers a high video resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels, a 160° diagonal field of view, night vision with powerful 850 nm infrared LEDs, speaker and microphone are high quality. Even with the Google Nest video doorbell, images can only be stored in the cloud, which requires a paid subscription to Nest or Ring.

Google Nest Video Doorbell Hello Features:

  • Power supply: Battery (not included)
  • Compatibility: Android, Apple iOS, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Nest
  • Video resolution: 1600 x 1200

Eufy Video Doorbell 2K

Finally, we introduce you to the premium product in terms of image quality: The eufy Video Doorbell 2K*, which of course also runs on battery power and comes with a HomeBase.

Incidentally, it’s also a bargain for lovers of a classy design: The slim eufy Video Doorbell is completely finished in matte black, from which the camera and microphone stand out with delicate blue accents. The HomeBase 2 visibly belongs to the same product family, but with its matte white fits very well in modern homes,

The camera produces a good image even in low light, and the 2K resolution (2560 x 1920 pixels) delivers the best, crisp image of any competitor reviewed so far.

In addition to doorbell operation and management via smartphone, the eufy Video Doorbell can communicate wirelessly with other devices in an existing Wi-Fi network. It is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The additional functions such as two-way communication, activity zone setting and intelligent person detection run reliably. The intelligent person detection avoids false alarms caused by animals, leaves, etc.; with the activity zone setting, the eufy Video Doorbell also proves itself at doors in front of which there is lively pedestrian traffic not too far away.

The HomeBase 2 serves as the central base for remote access and smart home integration, and also provides built-in storage for the 2K recordings. Local storage eliminates the need for subscriptions and subscription costs, as well as any uncertainty about the fate of the stored data.

  • Power supply: Integrated rechargeable battery (or connection to existing bell cable)
  • Battery life: Half a year with average use
  • Compatibility: Android devices, Apple iOS, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant

Does a video doorbell really help against burglaries?

This is certainly the case, especially when the smart Ring Doorbell is coupled with an alarm system like Ring Alarm. However, because winter is the best time for burglars and they mainly look for dark windows during the day, coupling it with a smart lighting system brings the optimal, preventive protection.

Advantages of a smart video doorbell

Smart WLAN video doorbells are not only chic, but also really useful:

When someone rings your doorbell, you can check your smartphone to see who’s at your door.

The smart doorbell is equipped with a camera and can receive and relay voice messages via a microphone.

If you are outside the apartment or in the garden, you will be informed about visitors via push notification to your smartphone – and you can even talk to them directly.

You can tell the delivery man where to leave the package before he drops the pickup card in the mailbox. You can send friends and visitors to the café next door when you’re stuck in traffic and firmly reject unwanted visitors without opening the door. If the smart Wi-Fi video doorbell is integrated into your home network, you will also be informed about visitors if you are in the shower without a smartphone or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen.

If the smart video doorbell works wirelessly, it will bring you the most benefit:

  • Wireless doorbell eliminates the hassle of connecting the doorbell to the power supply of the existing doorbell
  • It also often saves discussions with the landlord as to whether a tenant is allowed to change the power supply to the existing doorbell
  • Unlike the hardwired models, the wireless video doorbell can be freely positioned in the entrance area
  • Once the desired model of a wireless doorbell is selected and purchased, it is usually ready for operation in a few simple steps

It also has its advantages if the hardwired doorbell is still available: a wireless WLAN video doorbell that is powered by batteries or rechargeable batteries can also fail in rare cases. Some models require the battery to be changed every few months, which can be forgotten. The WLAN connection, through which the wireless doorbell works, can be disturbed or break down altogether. Then it is necessary to re-register the wireless doorbell in the WLAN. In such cases, the normal doorbell is then still available as a stopgap.
