Indoor Temperature Sensors for Alexa

There are currently three ways you can ass Alexa the room temperature: with a smart thermostat*, with the indoor temperature sensors of the Netatmo weather station or with the integrated temperature sensor of the Echo Plus.

The latter two possibilities are explained below.

Indoor Temperature Sensors of the Netatmo Weather Station

The modular Netatmo smart weather station is also available with indoor sensors. It connects to iOS and Android devices and also works with Amazon Alexa.

With the indoor sensors, you can not only measure the temperature, but also the humidity, the air pressure and even the CO2 level of the air and the noise pollution in your house. In addition to Alexa, you can, of course, access this data via the corresponding app. You can ask Alexa for any sensor and get the current values as an answer.

Fortunately, all these sensors are packed in a very attractive design. Most other weather stations often look clunky and unnecessarily large. The Netatmo weather station, on the other hand, has a very slim design made of an aluminum cylinder. This means that the indoor module fits into any room and does not have to be hidden somewhere.

Since we spend a very large part of our time inside, it is a good idea to monitor the quality of indoor air. Such things as the CO2 content in the air can make a big difference when it comes to our well-being and concentration at work.

The built-in CO2 sensor can let you know when you need to ventilate. This helps to prevent accompanying symptoms such as headaches or poor concentration.

Since the Netatmo Smart Weather Station can access weather data, you can simply ask Alexa how the weather will be tomorrow or how much rain has fallen today. So you can adjust your activities according to the weather and always know exactly when to water your lawn and when not.

The integration of Amazon Alexa and even IFTTT makes it possible to program smart events. You can set other electrical devices, such as an air conditioner for example, to switch on automatically when the temperature sensor of the Netatmo Weather Station has exceeded a certain threshold.

Further down in this article there is an even more detailed review of this device with the focus of an outdoor weather station. The weather station is not only equipped with outdoor temperature sensors but can also be extended with rain and wind gauges.

Since the second generation of the Echo Plus, a temperature sensor has been installed in the device.

With this indoor temperature sensor, you can ask Alexa what the temperature is like. You can find the temperature sensor inside the Alexa App and then add it to various Smart Home groups.

Once you’ve done this, you’re good to go. Ask “Alexa, what’s the temperature of [group name]?” and she’ll tell you the current room temperature.

You may have to wait up to 45 minutes before the first use until the temperature sensor has calibrated itself. Also, when installing the Echo Plus, be careful not to place it near a heater or other temperature sources such as a window or air conditioner. This can otherwise considerably alter the measurement result.

With this new feature, you can not only ask for the room temperature but also set and program smart events and chain reactions.

There are also smart thermostats*, like the Nest thermostat* or Ecobee* for example, that can do such things, but you can achieve a lot yourself with the Echo Plus and the built-in indoor temperature sensor. For example, it would be very easy to switch different electronic devices on and off at a certain temperature. As an example, you could switch on the fan or the air conditioner as soon as the temperature has exceeded a certain value – and all this without Alexa for it to respond, but completely automatically.

Since the temperature sensor in the Echo Plus is already available as a skill and can, therefore, be installed anywhere in any routine, smart thermostats can use the Echo Plus as their own room sensor. Not only can you save money this way, but you can also heat and cool your house much more accurately and efficiently.

There are really many ways you can use this feature of the Echo Plus. In addition to air conditioning, thermostats or fans, it is also possible to automatically raise and lower your blinds as soon as a certain temperature is exceeded or fallen below.

You save a lot of time because you don’t have to walk through your house to change everything. You can also save a lot of energy by automatically lowering the blinds at certain temperatures instead of turning on the air conditioning manually when it’s too late to lock out the heat.

The entire Smart Home theme revolves around time and energy savings. Automation does not only mean more comfort but also time and money savings!

Pros & Cons: Echo Plus Indoor Temperature Sensor

Pros:

  • Directly integrated into Echo Plus
  • No extra equipment necessary
  • Programming of events
  • Interaction with other devices
  • Obviously Alexa compatible

Cons:

  • If you are only looking for a thermometer, the Echo Plus may be overkill

The Best Alexa Weather Station: Netatmo Weather Station

At the moment there is only one smart weather station that can be considered for Alexa – the smart weather station from Netatmo.

Netatmo manufactures many popular Smart Home devices* and has never disappointed. The same applies to the Netatmo weather station, which can now also be controlled via Alexa.

The basic set consists of two sensors: the indoor sensor described above and an outdoor sensor. The Netatmo weather station connects to your wifi and sends the outdoor temperature sensor data to the Netatmo servers. This creates a very large community of worldwide Netatmo users.

As you can see in the picture below, you can view the weather data of all Netatmo users all over the world.

You can also use the Netatmo Weather App to view only your data such as temperature, air pressure, and humidity. Because the Weather Station is connected to your wifi, you can access your Weather Station from anywhere in the world as long as your smartphone or other mobile device is connected to the Internet. It can send you notifications that you can set in advance.

Since a few years, the Netatmo weather station can also be operated with Alexa!

Operation with Alexa

With an Amazon Alexa device* you can ask Alexa for the data of the different sensors, for example, “Alexa, ask Netatmo about the outside temperature!”.

To connect Alexa to your Netatmo weather station, all you have to do is activate the Alexa Skill in the Skill section of the Alexa App.

You can ask Alexa for the following data:

  • Outside temperature
  • Indoor temperature
  • The CO2 concentration of the air
  • Humidity inside
  • Humidity outside
  • Air pressure
  • Rain
  • Wind
  • Noise level inside

Design and Installation

The design of the Netatmo weather station is made of simple and modern aluminum and white plastic.

The outdoor module can be mounted with the back on a wall or other object and is powered by 4 AAA batteries which last for about one year.

However, it is important that the outdoor module is not waterproof – so you have to protect it from water or mount it directly under a roof.

The indoor module has a light strip on the side which lights up in a different color depending on the status of the weather station.

The range of the outdoor sensor is 100 m in the ideal case. In the real case, it is rather about 50 m since normally obstacles like walls are in the way.

The installation is very simple since both devices are already coupled with each other. All you have to do is supply the outdoor sensor with batteries and install it in a dry place in your garden. All you have to do is set up the indoor station and use the app to set it up with your smartphone. This is done via Bluetooth. Once you have transferred your wifi settings to the device, the Netatmo weather station connects to your wifi.

After that, you just have to activate the sensor above and the Netatmo weather station will set itself up automatically.

The Netatmo Weather App

The Netatmo weather app displays a lot of weather data. Both your weather station and global weather information the data of all other Netatmo users.

You can use the app on iOS and Android devices. Of course, on smartphones, you see less at once than on tablets, but you can still easily scroll through the different views, graphs and data.

You can use the app to retrieve data from both the outdoor sensors and the indoor module. In addition, these measured values can also be linked with configurable notifications. Since I always need enough fresh air to be able to concentrate at work, I have set a CO2 level alarm which notifies me immediately if a certain threshold is exceeded, so I can open the windows. Of course, you can also set notifications or alarms for the data of the weather station in your garden.

It is also useful to be notified when the air pressure suddenly drops because bad weather is on the horizon.

Since automatic measurements are taken every 5 minutes, there is no lack of data to evaluate. For example, you could look at how the temperature in your house drops at night and see if you need to turn up your heating a bit more to avoid moisture or to estimate when you should lower your blinds at what time in the summer to block the heat.

In order to be able to monitor the room temperature of various rooms in your home, you can also buy the indoor modules separately*. So you can ideally monitor the temperatures in the entire house.

The Rain Sensor of the Netatmo Weather Station

Check Price*

There is also a rain sensor for the Netatmo weather station. The design of the rain sensor, however, is not quite as chic as that of the other modules but trimmed for function rather than beauty.

The sensor is supplied with power by 2 AAA batteries and does not have to be installed under a roof like the other outdoor sensor – after all, it is supposed to measure the rain.

Just like the other outdoor module, you have to set up the rain sensor within 100 meters of the base station. If obstacles such as walls are in the way, this range is reduced of course.

The accuracy of the rain sensor is absolutely sufficient with 1 mm/h, even if you use the data to cultivate plants or run a farm. You can also calibrate the sensor inside the app to get even more accuracy.

Within the app, you can see not only the current rainfall but also the total rainfall per day and other data. That way you know when to water your plants.

Even if you are not a farmer or hobby gardener, the rain sensor still makes sense to warn you about rain, for example. If you have all windows open at once in summer and it rains, the sensor can warn you as soon as it detects rain.

The Wind Gauge of the Netatmo Weather Station

Check Price*

Just like the rain module, you can buy the wind meter separately and add it to your weather station in a modular way.

With the Netatmo wind gauge, you can measure wind direction and wind speed. It is a bit more stylish than the rain sensor, but also in black and not in plain silver like the main modules.

The anemometer, wind gauge, works with ultrasound. It has four ultrasonic transducers, which offer very high accuracy. Sounds complicated, but after the installation, you don’t have to worry about the device anymore (except the 4 AA batteries change every 2 years…).

The accuracy is 0.5 m/s (1.8 km/h) and 5° in the wind direction. It can measure a maximum wind speed of 160 km/h.

Do you like flying a drone or flying a kite with the kids? Then your wind gauge will tell you the ideal time! You can also set a smart alarm that tells you when conditions are best. A buddy of mine lives on the coast and has set himself an alarm as soon as it is warm outside and the wind is good for kitesurfing!

Pros & Cons: Netatmo Weather Station

Pros:

  • Compatible with Alexa
  • Compatible with other Smart Home systems
  • Large community
  • Well structured app
  • Customizable notifications
  • Weather information around the world
  • Numerous different sensors
  • No subscription necessary

  • Outdoor modules work with batteries

Summary

In this article, two ways have been presented with which you can ask about Alexa’s indoor temperature. On the one hand, you can do this with the Amazon Echo Plus* from the second generation or with the Netatmo weather station*.

The ingenious thing about the Netatmo weather station is that it is smart and you can set various customizable notifications and alarms. For example, it can let you know when the air quality in your house drops and you should open the windows or when the temperature rises above a certain threshold or it starts raining.

Since the Netatmo weather station is modular, you can add a separate rain sensor and wind gauge in addition to the basic outdoor module, in addition to temperature and humidity. This way you always know exactly what is going on outside and you can take care of your garden and your house in an ideal way.

But even if you’re just like me and just love data, it’s also a great gadget if you don’t have a garden! 😉
